iPhone Tip!

by Karen on February 26, 2012

This is one of those things I thought everyone knew.

Turns out … everyone doesn’t.

So if you *do* know this little tip, please ignore it and play quietly until the post is over.

Wanna crop a picture you have on your iPhone and save it but you don’t know how? This one’s for YOU.

iphone3

What’s actually happening when you push the on/off and home button is a “screen grab” What this means is, it’s taking a picture of whatever is on your iPhone screen at the time. So if you’re browsing the Internet or reading an email and you want to save a “picture” of it to your iPhone pictures, just push these two buttons at the same time and it’ll save whatever is on the screen.

To those who already knew this, thank you for your patience. I’m sure to have something you didn’t know tomorrow.

By the way … for those of you who are going to ask where I got my iPhone skin and matching wallpaper … they came from Decal Girl.  I love them with all my heart.

    • Loree/danger garden

It works on the iPad too! Thank you….

    • ellen

Thanks for the tip. There’s a lot my phone will do that is news to me.

    • Christie Thomas

Thanks! What a great tip! Thanks for the info on the chicken coop, I started planning ours today and we went and ordered our chicks!

        Excellent! ~ karen

      Hi there,
This is One of the few things I learned right away
      after starting with my iphone.
      And it’s so useful!
You never forget anything, a screen shot ,
and it’s saved on the camera roll.
Greetings from the German kitchen drawer owner!

    • Elle

questions about the skin – is it like a sticker you stick on your phone? can you take it off and then put it on again?

      • Karen

Elle – It’s a sticker, but removable. So you can put it on, remove it and put on a different one. I’m not sure how it would work if you removed it and then tried to put it back on again. Probably wouldn’t look as good as the first time. It might stretch out when you pulled it off. ~ karen

        • Christine Durst

Repositionable but not reusable. They do stretch. But for $9.99 USD – you can buy a whole bunch and change ‘em up when you want.

    • Michelle

My iphone is 2 weeks old and I have been searching reviews to find out tips on how to use it better – I find it easier to learn from someone (like you) than the techo manual books. Layman terms is what I need! Thanks for the tip :)

    • mimiindublin

Thanks, I didn’t know that, but I don’t profess to know much about my iPhone, I can’t even keep a call going on it, it goes to hold or something! Think I’m pressing it too close to my ear!
delighted to vote for you, feels good to do something (small) in return for all your tips, recipes, entertainment etc

    • Diane G

Thanks for the tip! I didn’t know how to do that and I’ve already tried it out. Thanks again.

    • cred

Whoa! I just went to vote & holy crap! you’re blowing them all away, even Centsational Girl. I like Centsational Girl, too but I am pretty impressed that a cdn blog is leading the pack. I guess that’s where the internet differs from other broadcast media.

Congratulations! btw- I can relate to the discomfort of self-promotion but we have to find out about it somewhere.

      Good luck!

    • Gloria Westerman

Thank you for this tip….I didn’t know….well now I do thanks to you……have a wonderful day!!!!
      Oh got anymore tips????

    • Rebecca

Thanks for the tip! And thanks for the self promotion, I wouldn’t have voted for you had you not. Nothing personal, I just wouldn’t have known to vote ;)

    • Lynne Knowlton

I am voting for you….because you rock out loud.
      Love,
      your stalker, errrrh…I mean… blog follower *_*.
      Lynne xx
      P.s.
      Have u tried the photo apps….cartoonatic, hipstamatic, and true HDR?…True HDR is fun to mess with and make funky pics. {I blogged about that one last week}
Big love…and going to vote RIGHT NOW.

      • Karen

Lynn … Thanks! I’ve downloaded the other ones, but not HDR. Not even sure what it is. I’ll go have a look! I find with those photo apps, I play with them a few times though and then never look at them again. :( I have about 6 or 7 camera apps. Eep. ~ karen

        • Lynne Knowlton

I feel your pain sista!….I have done the same with photo apps, EXCEPT cartoonatic, hipstamatic and true-HDR.

Here is the goofing/cheating that I do with true HDR-

          http://lynneknowlton.com/2012/02/23/how-to-cheat-the-true-hdr-photo-app/

and here is a sample of cartoonatic BLISS..yes, I have photo bliss with Cartoonatic…yum…

          http://lynneknowlton.com/2011/09/16/cartoonatic/#more-1143

The 3 apps are the only photo apps that I have stuck with for years. Otherwise, I just play and dump. I like exceptions to every rule *_* and those three photo apps are my exceptional faces. I think you should come to the tree house this summer, and we can goof with photo apps ! haha whatcha think?

          • Julie shinnick

Ya didn’t mention this cartoonatic was FREE!!! OMG!

            • lynne Knowlton

Ohhhh yahhh- music to our ears…. FREE! Yippppeee

              • Julie shinnick

oh….. you do have to pay 99c for the photo version but in the small amount of time I have had it ….worth every cent! so grooooovy baby!

    • Robbin Caskenette

I did not know this!!! Thank you! I wonder if this will work with my iPad?

      • Karen

Yes Robbin, it will. ~ karen

    • Robbin

It does work on the iPad! How exciting!!!!!

    • Rebecca

I found this out when I saw about fifty screen grabs of kids games in my photos. Don’t know how they figured that out, but they taught me something!

    • amber P

This also works on iPod Touch. You can also do this on some Android phones too. I have the EVO htc and i cannot do it, but the EVO 3D has capability, and some of the newer Droids.

    • Nancy

I don’t have an iPhone but I did vote for you!!

    • Kate

I’ve been an iPhone user for a few months, so I was VERY happy to see this tip. Thank you!

And I did vote for you! I love this blog!

      ;-)

      • Karen

        Thanks Kate! ~ karen

    • Kate

This was news to me. Great tip. Thanks Karen!

    • J9

It took me a year into having my iPhone to learn how to screen grab…but I am happy to report that I already knew how to do it by the time I read this post. What I did not know was that DecalGirl existed…I just spent a GREAT deal of time making a wishlist of Skins that I am going to buy!
      Thank you for that!

    • tiana

Or you could use the crop tool in the camera roll…

      • Karen

Tiana – Yes … this is just a bit faster. Plus the screengrab works for any website, email etc. ~ karen!

    • kelliblue

yeah, i have about 20 photo apps…plus my iphone is jailbroken which opens up the playing field!

      :)

    • Steve

A related tip: you can copy any photo you see on a website to your camera roll by tapping and holding on the pic. Hold your finger down until you get the “save image” requester.

Also, I voted for you as well. You deserve it!

      • Karen

Thanks Steve! I appreciate it. :) Now off to find my iPhone. Or iPad. Or iToaster. Anything to try the hold/save thing. Which I’m sure I’ve done accidentally, but never on purpose. ~ karen

    • Carole McGinnis

I just voted for you. I look at so many other blogs and you are my favorite!!!

      • Karen

Thanks Carole. That’s nice to hear. ~ karen

    • Ash

Ah ha! On my iPad. Now I have a screen shot of your page saying how to because of course I had to try it right away:)

      • Karen

        Heh! That’s kindda fun. :) ~ karen

    • Christina

I just voted, and you are now just a mere vote away from 1st place! Come on Karen-fans, vote, vote, vote!

Thank you for such a wonderful blog! You rock my socks.

      • Karen

        Thanks Christina! ~ karen

    • heather leigh

Just so you know, when you do screen shots they are usually really low resolution, same as on your computer. So if you have a nice high-res image you want to crop and keep at that quality, you’d be better off using an app that has crop functions (Camera+, etc). :)

    • J9

I came back to this post to tell you that I just received my order in the mail from DecalGirl…and it is…glorious.

      • Karen

Which one did you get?! ~ karen
