Last week I gave everyone the chance to enter my “Year of Pies” cookbook giveaway. 4 books to give away, only one way to enter. All you had to do was leave a comment telling me what your favourite pie was.
I learned a lot about you and myself with that one simple question.
I learned there are an enormous amount of pie flavours roaming around that I had no idea existed. Chess pie being one of them. Not Checkers pie. Chess pie. And it’s a remarkably popular pie, this pie I’ve never heard of it. I suspect Chess Pie is going to be like one of those words you don’t know exists until someone points it out to you. Then you hear and notice it everywhere. I wouldn’t be surprised if the next time I walk into a grocery store there’s a mountainous Chess Pie display with people running and screaming to make sure they get one.
Chess Pie. Look it up. Uch, fine. Here’s the Wikipedia definition.
I also learned that if poked in the eye, more than half of you would choose apple pie as your favourite. Yes. It is the apple of your eye.
The more comments I read the more I started to waiver on my own favourite pie. I was pretty sure it was blueberry. Until you all started describing warm, straight out of the oven, gooey apple pie, served with a side of “just starting to melt” vanilla bean ice cream.
It got me to thinking apple might be my favourite. Then I realized I could just have straight out of the oven, warm blueberry pie with a delicious flaky crust and a side of vanilla bean ice cream. That sounded just as good didn’t it? Yup.
But when I told the fella about my plans for Blueberry pie, he looked at me scoffed and went on a diatribe about the death trap that is warmed blueberry pie. It was very fella’s father of him. It won’t kill you. Just the people around you. Blueberry pie I was told is only to be served cold.
Apparently warmed blueberry pie is such a disgusting concoction it’s enough to induce violent gagging among those in the vicinity of the warmed pie eater. A little known theory is that in his last moments of life, John Bonham was sitting beside a warmed blueberry pie eater. True story.
So, not wanting to kill anyone, I’m back to warmed apple pie.
I’m also back to giving away the cookbooks.
As promised I have 4 Year of Pies cookbooks by Ashley English to give away. All randomly chosen. Except for the last name. Which was selected by the fella in accordance with his made up rules.
If you are one of the lucky winners, email me at email@example.com and I’ll take it from there!
If you like warm blueberry pie … raise your hand. If we all raise them high enough and wave them around at the same time we might be able to beat the fella’s inflated head down to normal size again.
