The Inspiration

Browsing around my favourite Dollarama today I came across this candy dish that I loved!  Hmm … I don’t really like candy though.   Not one to be stalled by the rules of convention, I set about to see what else I could put in it. For your viewing pleasure …. 10 uses for a Dollarama candy dish.

Holiday candy

Extra tea lights

Cat/dog treats

Sugar (this is the raw stuff)

Dishwasher tabs

Flour

Um ... more holiday candy (Easter Candy Corn!)

Oh my God Karen, this is brilliant! Every single one better than the next. I especially love the dishwasher tabs and the tulips. So simple. I am about to go to Dollarama for the first time, because of you. I will report back.

  2. Uncle Shifty says:

    Condoms too.

    • Karen says:

Um … if you’re the proprietor of a brothel … by all means … yes, condoms too! And THIS is why you’re referred to as Uncle Shifty. 🙂

  3. Guylaine says:

    cool! I love the flowers!

    • Karen says:

Thanks Guylaine – I like ’em too! The dish is currently holding the mini biscotti though. I should be able to change it over to the tulips .. um … in about an hr. and a half I would guess. 🙂

Those dishwasher tabs are the cutest things I’ve ever seen!!

    • Mon says:

Oh… the dollarama candy dish is pretty cute too! 🙂

      • Karen says:

Thanks Mon. The Dollarama candy dish is retired for now. I kept filling it up with mini biscottis. And then emptying it of mini biscottis. Then filling it with mini biscottis … you get the picture.

I work at Dollarama, and I do love our little glass bowls. They come in such lovely shapes!

I actually used these exacts bowls for giving my pet degus dustbaths. Some small animals (like rats, degus, hamsters) love to dig, and this kind of bowl is really fun for them to play in. Just make sure to put a mat underneath the bowl to catch all the dust/dirt they kick out!

HELP PLEASE where can I purshase these????
I want to use them as wedding favors with candy inside ….thanks in advance.

    • Karen says:

Dini – I don’t know where you’re from! If you’re in Canada, these dishes were found at Dollarama last year. I’m not sure if they’re carrying them at the moment or not. They do regularly have them! ~ karen

Hello Karen! I cannot get enough of your site and keep coming to visit to look at all of your archives! I am always one for a deal, I tell ya. I cannot believe you got that bowl at a Dollarama. Here in America (California) I bought a large size and medium size of these at Crate & Barrel and I paid 12 for the medium and and 14 dollars for the large one. We have here, 99 Cent Stores and Dollar Trees, but I have never seen anything as awesome as that bowl or the magnificent table setting with the artichokes.

Keep up the awesome work! I have been giving myself away at work laughing so hard at your humor. You crack me up and give me a wonderfully needed boost in a very mundane work day.

Take the best of care and keep em comin!

Laura – Thank you for the very nice comment! I’ve heard from other people that we’re pretty lucky here in Canada with regards to our Dollarama. It is a pretty great Dollar Store. I’ve been so busy building the chicken coop I haven’t had a chance to go this summer at ALL. I can’t even begin to think about the deals I’ve missed! ~ karen

I know this is really old but I found your blog about a few weeks ago and I REALLY love it. Trying to catch up.
However, the tulips kinda creep me out, they look like pod people tulips.

  9. Jolene says:

Love the tulip and the Q-tips. None of the others will work in Minnesota in the summer. Dat-burn humidity!

    Hi Karen!
This is kind of uncanny, because just last night I washed out the exact same candy dishes (I have 3 of them) which were holding small plants that had died. I had simply put rocks in the bottom to give the earth breathing space, and then plopped the mini plants in. They sat on my windowsill and they looked great, but died after about 2 years. So glad I came across this. Now I’ll either try some of these great ideas, or replant them with cacti.

    • Karen says:

And did you get your candy dishes at the Dollar Store too? Mine is currently holding Q Tips and cotton balls. I wish it were holding biscotti. 🙂 ~ karen

  11. Naomi says:

Mine are totally from Dollarama. Love that store. I loved them so much I bought 3! (which look great displayed together). The new Dollarama at Bloor and Bathurst is AMAZING. 😉

  12. Lex says:

I think I like the q-tips the best, I don’t think I could put food in it because I would worry about dust and stuff.

  13. cdn75 says:

Very cool. The dishwasher tabs worry me though. There have been many reports of small kids thinking they were candy and eating them. I would only display them like that in a home without small kids.

  14. Lorraine says:

I wouldn’t put in it flour, sugar or biscuits, unwrapped candy or any food that should be kept covered. Don’t like the idea of fresh flowers either. JMO.
