Easter Wallpaper.
From Me to You

I gather eggs on a daily basis.  Much like a farmhand.  Oftentimes I look like a farmhand.  Sadly for me, I usually look this way when people show up unannounced.  Happily for me, I don’t much care.

I know I clean up nice, so that’s really all that matters.  Well, that and the fact that I usually lead the visitor right through a pile of chicken poop in the backyard, so we’re on more of a level playing field.  I once stuck a piece of straw in my sister’s hair without her knowing and let her leave my house and hop in her car like that.  Serves her right for always having her make up done and a matching outfit on.  For those in the know … this was the sister that ate the perfect strawberry.

The other day I went out to bring in the eggs and there were 4 in the nesting box.  4 is always a thrill because it rarely happens.  I might get 4 eggs in a day but it isn’t often that they’ve all laid them in a close enough time period that I gather them all at once.  So, as I was saying before my own story interrupted me … the other day I went to gather the eggs.

The odd time there are things stuck to the eggs that shouldn’t be stuck to the eggs.  A piece of straw, a wood shaving, a Captain and Tennille album.  Occasionally there’s a tiny feather stuck to it.  Which I’ve always thought was cute.

But when I brought the eggs in this particular time, there was a large feather stuck to one of the eggs.  A rather large, fluffy, bum feather.  Chickens have fluffy bums if you didn’t know.  I’m not sure if I’m the only one who would get excited about this kind of thing, but I was pretty excited about the bum feather egg.  Excited enough that I thought it warranted a picture.

Problem was … what was I going to do with the picture?  I couldn’t in good conscience revolve an entire post around an egg with a bum feather stuck to it.

Then I started thinking what a cute Easter decoration it would be.  And I’m not all that big on Easter decorations and pastel colours or even the word cute.  So, it’s saying a LOT if I thought this was a cute Easter decoration.   All of this led to my idea.

Now that that’s over with, I’d best go run a brush through my hair.  And push my sister in the mud.

  1. Laura Bee says:

Oh Karen, so simple & pretty. Thanks for the wallpaper. We had chickens when I was a kid & I am now living vicariously through you. Most of the time you make me laugh, but sometimes…you make me feel like a sap.

  2. Renee says:

I’m currently imagining a British character named Madam Bumfeather. Thanks for the funny thought, but I think this means I need to go to sleep!

  3. AnnW says:

You couldn’t write an entire post about an egg with a bum feather on it? Of course you can! You can do anything. I don’t know how to change my wallpaper, but I think I can forward it to someone. How about some Easter recipes? I listen to Laugh Attack on XM radio. They always say, “More Canadian than Anne Murray eating poutine with pop on a chesterfield.” What exactly does that mean? Are you allowed to turn your front yard into a farm? I’m sure it will look like Martha Stewart planted it. Ann from Connecticut

  4. Rebecca says:

My landlord once told me he doesn’t understand why people raise chickens in the city and started talking about how gross things get stuck to the eggs. He argued that if more people knew this, they wouldn’t think it was cool. The entire time he was talking I kept thinking how wrong he was…and that he is because this is cute! (and I still want to raise chickens in the city)

  5. Thanks for sharing. I love the feather!

  6. Kristin says:

Thanks Karen….once again you have managed to give my morning that uplift that I needed. It kinda makes me want to get the “green acres” thing going on.

  7. Anita says:

nice! but be careful, that pic is showing Martha up. Her crafty groupies may come after you.

  8. Amy Schmucker says:

If you gave them the feather.. WOuld they eat it?

  9. Bernadette says:

glad you got your priorities in order. bum-feathered eggs are totally post-worthy.

  10. Tess says:

    It’s like a gift.

  11. Maureen @theThriftyLass says:

I think you Canadians are much more refined than us down south of your border. We would never say “bum”, just “ass” or “butt”, neither of which seem to go with an Easter motif. Good job!

  12. Deborah says:

awwwwwwwwwwwww…. how adorable is that?! You make me howl, I look forward to your posts because I seriously don’t know WHERE your mind is headed on any given day 😀

  13. Thera says:

    Egg-cellent and thank you!
(sorry I just had too lol)

  14. Denise says:

Thanks for posting that cool pic for all of us who are only able to get our eggs from the grocery store.

  15. Jodi says:

I was thinking of you the other day when I was feeding my chickens (does that seem weird?). I was just wondering how your fight with town hall is going in respect to keeping your chickens? You haven’t mentioned that in a while and it infuriated me when I first read about it. God forbid you try to provide food for your family! Those suits can be such jerks sometimes.

    • Karen says:

Hi Jodi – All is quiet on the chicken front. No bylaws have changed as of yet, but I think the decision has just been shelved for a couple of months. I’ll let you and everyone know when there’s any news to tell. ~ karen!

  16. Sibling rivalry at its finest! Great bum egg. Have you ever tried Pysanky?

  17. AmieM says:

Don’t you just love pushing your sister in the mud? It’s a sister prerogative!

  18. jen says:

I’ll put this on both my work computer (in my home office) and my personal computer (which mostly resides in the den) and consider my Easter decorating complete!

  19. Nicole2 says:

Thank youuuu! So cute. It would make a cute Easter apron too (hint, hint, Easter apron giveaway???), a cute Easter card, a cute Easter pillow, heck, you could have a whole line of bumfeathered egg products!

Is the egg really this lovely yellow colour??

    • Karen says:

Nicole2 – That particular egg is actually green. It may be appearing differently on your computer screen. ~ karen!

      • Nicole2 says:

Now that I look at it, it does look green, but the feather’s colour makes it look more yellow I think. I don’t know. Either that or I’m colour confused.

  20. Sally says:

Perfectly timed, this post. I spent the day yesterday with MY sister…just junking and stopping to eat…and junking some more. At lunch I wanted to push her face in the hummus because she’s lost weight and now wears a size smaller than me…and she’s has great hair. My hair looks like your bum feather.

  21. katie says:

Fluffy chicken bums are one of my favorite aspects of raising chickens in the city. They’re so FLUFFY!

  22. Sherri says:

Great photo! Thanks for the new wallpaper; it beats the usual “spring flowers” I have up at this time of the year. It also makes me think of you when I see it and that always brings a smile to my face. (Don’t worry…I’m not a stalker. You just make me smile and laugh, which is a good thing.)

  23. Arianne says:

I just wanted to tell you that you make me giggle every day and are an inspiration to me as I get my own blog off the ground. Thanks for bringing a smile to my face!

  24. Deborah says:

OOOOH! An Apron! What an excellent idea! I could design/make/provide one for you to giveaway (see website address when you get this comment) 🙂

  25. Barbie says:

That there is the prettiest lil egg “Madam Bumfeather” I have ever seen! I LOVE the comments! Except I’m missing Marti’s today….she usually comments in the first few…where is she today?

  26. michelle says:

ooooooo i can’t wait for fluffy chicken bums!! mine are just peepy little chicks right now. so excited to “share” these experiences with you!

  27. Debbie says:

I think your chickens love you and this was a Easter present to you. Now I want chickens. My dogs never leave me anything eatable or cute!

  28. Anna says:

As i read your post an got to the line “I couldn’t in good conscience revolve an entire post around an egg with a bum feather stuck on it” I knew you had done just that. Love it.. Made me laugh!!
Are all of your chickens Easter eggers or do you have a mix?
Call me if you ever need to wash or candle your eggs,Just don’t ask me to collect eggs, I don’t reach under any fluffy chicken bums. Tried once and it was not pretty.
Thanks again for lightening up my day with your wonderful humor.

  29. Karol says:

Thank you for the festive wallpaper! I had no idea (city girls don’t) that bumfeathers were fluffy. I have purchased those fluffy feathers in stores to use in my crafts and had no idea they were chicken butt feathers. Thanks for the laugh and a future mental picture everytime I hot glue one of those babies.

  30. Diane says:

I added a link to this on my Facebook page, hope that’s ok. I love the picture (as I am not a big Easter decorator either) and have set my wallpaper accordingly 😀 Thanks!!

  31. Arlene says:

Thank God you choose the clean & cute little bum feather egg photo to share – and not the photo at the other end of the spectrum – which i can only refer to as “the episiotomy egg” photo — you know the one ~~
    fellow urbanville chicken farmer

  32. thanks Karen, the wallpaper is gorgeous!
    Bum feather, ha ha!

  33. Nancy Blue Moon says:

Wow..didn’t expect it to be so pretty Karen..I was thinking of you the other day at a local farm & garden store..They have big metal tubs of baby chicks for sale every year at this time..I could hardly resist bringing a few home but we have a few things we have to do before we will be ready for them..

    • Karen says:

Nancy – Yes, well, that didn’t stop the fella from bringing home a box of them this time last year! I just about fainted. ~ karen!

      • Nancy Blue Moon says:

Yeah..I remember that..but look at all the fun you have had with them..Not counting the cuts, scrapes and bruises from building the coop..lol

  34. Erin Hall {i can craft that} says:

very nice. I read blogs at work while slacking off unfortunately I cant read yours because its listed as being pornographic…. did you know that?

    • Karen says:

Yup. It’s because I use the word porn and use words like penis and yeast infection and such. Oftentimes the programs that filter things from the Internet aren’t always very smart. ` karen!

  35. That is truly touchingly beautiful Karen, and to think it is straight from bum to us, unretouched! You know how to treat your readers.

  36. kelliblue says:

so cute and EGG-citing! 🙂 “Easter porn.” Somehow that just doesn’t seem right.

  37. Stephanie B says:

I haven’t looked at pastels the same since ‘Miami Vice.’ That should’ve killed them for me for all eternity. I must say, though, that was quite a cute bum feathered egg and has been thrust onto my screen as today’s ‘Wallpaper of the Day” A game I usually reserve for things like your 7 year old decked out in his sister’s faerie outfit, complete with wings and high heels. HA! While fun, it does leave me open to retaliation in the future. You have saved me a torturous death by…..TWEENS!!!

    ~Stephanie B in North Carolina

  38. Carol mcclure says:

crap. Now I want some vintage egg cups.

  39. Jodie says:

Funny, funny! I giggled right through whatever TV show is on in the background. Love it!
