I’m No Fun.

Who knew my favourite part about getting advertisers wasn’t going to be the money I made from it, but going through the different sites and picking out my favourite things?

O.K., it really is the money, but going through the sites is a lot of fun!  And I know about fun!  Actually that’s not true.  Once on a trip to New York City one of those people who try to drag you in to see comedy shows grabbed my boyfriend and I.  He went through his big long spiel about how going to see this comedy show would be the best experience of our lives and it might even end up on television blah, blah, blah.  He  finished with “Doesn’t that sound like fun?!”.  I looked him directly in the eyes and said “I don’t like fun.”.  To which my boyfriend affirmed … “She really doesn’t”.

It’s not that I don’t like “fun” per say, so much as my idea of fun is different from most people’s.  For me, organizing a closet is fun.  Going to a bar is not.  Rearranging the coffee table is fun.    New Year’s Eve is not.   Chopping wood is fun.  Comedy Clubs are not.    No big whoop.

And as I mentioned, going through my advertisers sites and picking out my favourite pieces is FUN!

Today I’m featuring Tara Gilchrist who is a fellow Canadian!  Yay!  She makes really sleek, homemade glass jewellery.  She  also does some glass blowing.  Which I’ve tried to do and incidentally, thought was fun.

This is Tara’s button …

And these are a few of my favourite things …

Red and Pink Ring

I absolutely love this glass red ring.  It reminds me of candy hearts and Valentine’s Day.  Plus it’s only $22.

Black and White Cufflinks

I have never had occasion to wear cufflinks, but if I did … these would be the ones I would wear.  I love all the mod/graphic design she uses.

I also love these ones …

Blown Glass Ant Bowl

I love this.  It’s clever. And I’m partial to clever.  Tara has a whole “Ant” motif.  She has rings with a big ant on them, cufflinks, pendants.  Again … I LOVE them.

Red, White and Gray Pendant

Drop Earrings

(all her earrings are 30% off right now, by the way)

I’m the sort of person who always thinks I want to wear big chandelier earrings.  Then when I try them on I feel like a prostitute at worst, a drag queen at best.  They’re the sort of thing that only certain people can pull off.  People like Diana Ross.  And Dame Edna.   THESE …  I could pull off.   Most probably after a long day of not having fun.  πŸ™‚

Love the ant bowl! So cute. Those earrings rock as well.

  2. mimi says:

    Karen, this stuff is amazing.
And as a reader, I’m thrilled about your advertisers too, cos you’re showcasing some fab stuff here, saving us the bother of trawling through loads of rubbish to get to it.

  3. marilyn says:

hey karen, i love taras work as well and when i looked at it for the first time i said to myself wow karen would just love that ant bowl! apparently myself was right. lol

  4. I’m not a jewelry person but I like her stuff—but that ant bowl is fantastic!

  5. Joanne B says:

That’s my idea of fun too!

  6. shirley huang says:

I’m with you. Cleaning and organizing are definitely FUN!!! I can do that every weekend. πŸ™‚

  7. Alyssa says:

Love your new ad’s. And am in complete agreement with you on the organizing is fun… I love taking a room apart and reorganizing it. So much satisfaction. However, much as I love it, I come no where near to my friends 3 year old daughter, who would start to sort out a mixed up bag of screws and nails into their appropriate bins *in* the hardware stores with her Dad.

  8. Oona says:

Heh, I don’t like fun either. People are always trying to convince us to come out and “have fun”, but I have enough fun at home.

  9. cred says:

I’m also glad you’re posting ads so like Mimi says, it saves us wading thru scads of ads.

I bought myself a ring & a pendant from Tara yesterday and I mentioned that I saw her ad here. She was grateful to know since this is the first time advertising and now she knows it pays off.

She does make beautiful pieces and I decided to buy myself a birthday present- okay my bday isn’t till May but since I won’t be out having fun that day, I may as well have my own kinda fun (really, really early)

  10. That ant bowl is truly gorgeous!

  11. jo says:

All you people who think cleaning and organizing is fun are welcome to come over to my place. I’ll leave the key under the doormat. Don’t mind the cats.
    … jo

  12. Alexandra says:

Yeah, I’m no fun either. Bars and binge drinking aren’t really my things. Crafting and cleaning and organizing aren’t really my cup of tea either. Mostly, I like to watch movies and TV, read blogs about people who like to craft, clean, and organize, and then go to my basement and dance around to traditional Celtic folk songs. Just kidding about the last part…or am I?

You’re rolling in the dough now, Karen!

    • Karen says:

Alexandra – I sense you’re not kidding about the Celtic folk songs. That’s O.K. If we were all honest about things like dancing to Celtic Folk Songs we’d all be much happier. Hell, if my basement wasn’t filled with centipedes, I might just do it myself! ~ karen

  13. lori says:

OK let me say this about the ant bowl (to clarify my first statement)I reeeeaaally despise little creatures that have those little legs or big ones for that matter. They give me the heebie-jeebies.
Other than that I like her things. πŸ™‚

    • Karen says:

Lori – LOL. My mother called me today to say how much she LOVED that bowl! I’m not sure that she’s partial to ants either, but .. she liked the bowl. πŸ™‚ ~ karen

  14. Lisa says:

I just bought a cute pair of earrings and let her know I came from here, win win!

  15. Raychelle says:

I don’t think going to bars and/or New Year’s Eve are fun either. And I thought I was the only one who could wast a day avoiding taking a shower. I do shower, but sometimes not when the world thinks you’re SUPPOSED

  16. Tara says:

Thanks Karen and everyone for the kind words!
The best thing about the ant bowls is watching peoples reactions to them when they walk past. Can be very funny

  17. Tara says:

Also, for those of you who like organizing things, the disaster that is my glass studio would be like disneyland!

  18. Charlene says:

While I cannot imagine anyone NOT enjoying the odd binge drinking, the closet organizing I totally get. That being said I may or may not be drunk RIght NOW. My sobriety not withstanding, I am forced to go google Tara because you said her work was blown glass. The contriarian (or maybe the drunk) in me thinks it’s fused glass and not blown. Either way, it’s lovely work.

    • Karen says:

Hi Drunkie! Tara’s rings are fused but she does have blown glass on her site ( the ant bowl is a perfect example ). As you were … ~ karen

  19. JiLLy says:

I’m a few posts after the fact, but thanks, Karen, for demystifying the ad button thing. I’ve been clicking around and the quality of your advertisers’ products is impressive. (And the shipping prices are all really decent, too.) I’ve been sharing your blog with everyone I know, and telling them to click away at the buttons!

I’m so glad you’ve highlighted Tara’s work in this post – I’ve not seen anything like it and I’m in love! I’ll be spending a little (lot) of my hard-earned overtime on gifties from her site: earrings for me, earrings for Mom, pendant for me, pendant for bestie, more earrings for me…. Fun, fun, FUN! πŸ™‚
