The Lazy Man’s Guide to the Best Photos Evvvvah

Same thing, but different.

Lazy Days

Have you ever wanted to create gorgy gorgeous photos and yet you don’t have the fancy schmancy camera equipment to make that happen?

Have you gone through the soul-crushing sense of failure when you try to take a decent photo and end up with something that is hard on the eyes?

Whatever expectations you made about your photos, they eventually went belly up.  Did it cause you to drink too much vodka and mainline ganache-covered cupcakes and cookies?

Really?!  I have never done that.  I have totally done that.

After the sugar high and then the low, I scraped myself off of the concrete and took a photo.   With my phone.  Then I edited it like the boss.

Because there’s an app for that.

The Best photo Apps in the History of the Universe. Just sayin'. #photoapps #photography

There is hope.  Your photos don’t need to be ghastly.   Your photos can be bootylicous and sumptuous, and it can all be a snap to do.

It’s quite simply … SIMPLE to do.

It ain’t that hard.  None of it.

All of the photos in this blog post were taken with my iPhone and edited with photo apps.  That’s it.  Simple.  In seconds.  Nothing fancy.  Not a shmancy camera in sight.  I have never taken a photography class.  Like ever.  In the history of ever.

If I can do it, so can you.

There are about six-million-billion-trillion photo apps to choose from out there.  I’m about to narrow it down and blow your mind with some faves.

These are not just any ol’ apps.  They are tried and true.  Top drawer.  Back of the bus.  The best of the best.

They will float your boat and butter your bread.

The Best photo Apps in the History of the Universe. Just sayin'. #photoapps #photography

Why use these apps?  What’s in it for you?

Quite simply…   Images are über important to catch our attention in todays social landscape.  Many of us have the attention span of a cocker spaniel puppy.

We need images to grab a hold of us and hold us…  even if it is for just a short time.

The Best photo Apps in the History of the Universe. Just sayin'. #photoapps #photography

I did it.  So can you.

These photo apps have helped to grow my social presence and blog.  They have made a huge impact in the creation of my brand look and feel. They have helped to catapult my bloggy to success.

If you ever think that images don’t matter.  Think again.

Think about whenever you read a news feed, blog or other social media sites.  Does the written text hold your attention or do great images grab you?  I know the answer.  I bet you do too.

Unless the written text says  ” You’ve won the lottery ” … then all attention grabbing bets are off.  That will garner some attention.

PS.  I want to be your new best friend.

Note to self :  Images need to be puuurty.  Dang puuurty.

The Best photo Apps in the History of the Universe. Just sayin'. #photoapps #photography

I’m here to teach you how I do it.

Hint :  I do it with staggering simplicity.

It is no big surprise that any brand or business online needs some pretty drop dead gorgeous photos to grab attention.

As a blogger, at one point I thought I needed to go to hell or high water to make people want to read my blog.  Boy, was I wrong.  I started to really focus on images. They became an integral part of my blogging journey.   Images break up text.  They make it easier to scan a blog post.  They are enjoyable.  A little eye candy never hurt anyone.  Images tell a story.

Images are the difference that makes the difference.

They are a game changer.

The rest is history.

The Best photo Apps in the History of the Universe. Just sayin'. #photoapps #photography

How did I create gorgeous photos the EASY way?

Part of my success was because I could simultaneously pat my stomach and rub my head while standing on top of my refrigerator and taking a photo. { Insert big toothy smile here }

I do it all with my phone and photo apps.

It’s easy.  You like easy, right?  I knew I liked you.

My all time fave apps in the history of the universe :

1.   Instagram :  Turn almost any photo into pretty.  Stunning, actually.

2.  Cartoonatic  :  Sketch a photo without picking up a pencil.

3.   Hipstamatic :   Pop colours, change filters, and frame it all up with the shake of your phone.

4.   Glaze :   Create works of art, without a paint brush.  Tahh dahhh …

Don’t have a cell phone?  No sweat.  PicMonkey to the rescue :

Use PicMonkey on your laptop or home computer.  It will change your life.  Okay, that might have been a wee bit dramatic.  PicMonkey will change how you edit photos.  For the better.  Big time.  It is the short cut to photo editing.  There is nothing to download, no purchases to be made, no software skills needed.   It’s easy breezy beautifully nuttily easy to use.  Edit a photo in seconds.  You can change filters, add text, frame it, and resize it.  In a flash.  Okay, enough about that.  Just do it.

Clap yourself up.

Pat yourself on the back.

Shake your groove thing.

You rock out loud.

Just sayin’.

Did you love these apps ?  Say Yes.  Woot woot !!

I wrote a few blog posts about them and a how-to guide gushing about their epic-ness.  Yup.  That’s true love.   I should really put a ring on it.

You are going to want that free book.  Go download it or get slapped with a pork chop.

What are your fave photo apps?   Spill it.  Lemme have it in the comments.

Note from Karen.  I’m REALLY excited to try Glaze!  Thanks Lynne!  Just so everyone knows, I’m pretending to work on my kitchen but what I’m really doing is playing on my phone and eating chips.

  1. Brigid says:

I cannot imagine life without Camera+ or Snapseed. Lens Light is super-fantastic if you need to add a light saber or glowy, prismatic thingies to a pic. Or lightening. You can add that too. I also have those attachable/detachable lens’ for my iPhone. The Macro one is A-mazing. That is all.

    • Lynne says:

      Hi Brigid,

I agree ! Camera + is d’bomb dot com. LOVE. I actually wrote about it and a couple of others in my ebook. So ahhhhmazing.

Lens Light ~ Oh my, I can’t wait to give that a whirl. Step aside Darth Vader. 🙂

One of my best buddies (who happens to be a pro photographer) LOVES the macro lens. I have been ignoring her for forever about buying one. Now, I want one BAD. 🙂

She will be so proud of me for taking the plunge. Don’t tell her it is because of you.

Thanks for the hot tips !

      Lynne xx

  2. Call Me Patty says:

OMG! I just downloaded some of them, and I will not be able to sleep tonight. This is WAY too much fun. Damn I need some chips, I’m out of chips. Thanks Lynne

    • Lynne says:

      Hahahaha !

Some of the best app work we do is in the middle of the night, when we can’t sleep.

The only problem is when your phone or iPad falls on your face when you start to nod off. That’s a quick awakening. Ha !

Then I turn on the white noise sleepy time app 🙂

I think I need an intervention. You ? 🙂 xx

  3. Meagan says:

Pixlr-o-matic is my go-to photo app. It has so very many options for filters, effects, and frames! Just editing one picture takes some time, but the end result is stunning!

    • Lynne says:

Thank you for the reminder Meagan !!

I haven’t used that one in a while. I am going to have a blast in there again. Woot woot !

All good things are worth waiting for 🙂

      Lynne xx

  4. Agnes says:

I miss you Karen. Come back soon.

    • Ruth says:

      I feel a kitchen reveal coming on… 😀

      • Lynne says:

And her kitchen is a dang fine kitchen too. So beautiful !!

The entire ‘kitchen reveal’ suspense is killing me:) You too?

I wonder if the chickens will be allowed to see it first.

        • Ruth says:

But of course! She has set the bar high with the chicken coop so the chickens will definitely need to inspect her latest effort in order to make sure it is up to snuff.

          I think Cuddles has quite a discerning eye… 😉

  5. Ruth says:

Cool…. very cool… but I would need a fancy schmancy phone for that (the equiv of a car payment in these parts), so I use Photoscape… a free download from CNET, because island Internet can be temperamental. ;-D

    • Lynne says:

Photoscape : That sounds funky ! Thanks Ruth, I’m going to check that out right now.

Uhm P.s Island internet … you are on an island ? May I come and live with you? 🙂

      • Ruth says:

On an island for real… repping Jamaica out in the Caribbean Sea, if you please. I would tell you to be sure to schedule your visit before the Atlantic Hurricane Season begins in April/May but – from your very cheery posts – I have this idea that you have no anxiety issues so… come on over. 😀

  6. Kim says:

I think PicMonkey has just transformed my life. Amazeballs!

  7. Carol says:

Oh no! I had enough of this woman yesterday. Tries to be funny with her made up words, but isn’t.

    • Tigersmom says:

Perhaps you’re new here, (and I am taking the liberty to speak for many I believe feel the same way) but in this commenting community, we make a concerted effort to disagree politely and respectfully.

So in the future, please keep it nice or keep it to yourself.

      • Lynne says:

        I think I love you.

        I owe you.

I was just getting ready to cry into a bowl of cereal. You saved my face from the milk dump in the bowl.

THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for your beautifully kind words.

        Lynne xx

        • Shirley says:

Thank you, Tigersmom, for speaking for me and, I am sure, for Karen and 99% of the rest of her faithful readers. Now let’s let this be the last word on the subject, so that it doesn’t hijack this excellent post and its interesting and informative replies. I am definitely saving this post for future reference and am really looking forward to trying out all these fantastic-sounding apps. Thanks, Lynne et al!

    • Auntiepatch says:

WOW! Did you not get enough sleep last night? Would you like to see something like that aimed in your direction? Don’t you remember what Bambi’s Mom told him? She said, “If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything at all!” Sheesh!

Lynne is a GUEST of Karen’s here and should be treated as such. If you don’t like what she is posting, you are invited to hit delete.

Karen – Looks like you need to do a post on manners………just saying……..I’ll get down now.

      • Lynne says:

        Thank you AuntiePatch,

I just had a *happy tear*. Karen has the best readers. You all stick together and play fair and square. Thank you thank you thank you.

        I loves you for that.

  8. Sally A. says:

Hi Lynne! I’m so glad to see you on Karen’s blog! Enjoyed your post yesterday too! I love your positive attitude and hilarious words of encouragement and enthusiasm!! You are a joy! I commented on your blog a couple of weeks ago about how I wanted to start one of my own, but was hesistant. You were so sweet with the way you encouraged me and took the time to give me so much information on how to go about it! You.Are.AWESOME!! Here’s to you and your continued success! I don’t know why people have to be so mean and rude. I think you’re terrific and obviously Karen does too, so you must be! :o) Keep up the good work!

P.S. Hi Karen! Done yet? Put down those chips!! J.k.! Relax. You deserve to!

    • Sally A. says:

I just imagined you clutching the chips and growling at me….:o)

    • Lynne says:

      Hi Sally,

I am so happy to help. So great that it made a difference for you! Thanks for saying so !!

Anytime you need a helping hand… just shout ! Unless it is late at night. I’m easily startled in the wee hours 🙂

      Much love !

  9. Su says:

OMG GLAZE is awesome! and fun 🙂

    • Lynne says:

      Isn’t Glaze unbelievable Su ??!!

The ‘artwork’ is remarkable from a simple photo. They would be great framed on canvas too. Oh la la. Enjoy!!

      Cheers !

  10. Tigersmom says:

Again, very timely, very useful info for me.

    Thanks so much.

Karen – please paint us a picture of your new kitchen with Glaze in your spare time. ; )

  11. nicole d says:

i loooveee the FaceTune App. Specifically for photos of people.

  12. Ann says:

Snapseed is what I am using the most now. But will go download and try some other suggested ones. I am not one for the artistic changes that come with Instagram and such. I want better, more realistic type editing. I am very interested in knowing about the iPhone camera lenses..will go look that up right away.

Many people don’t even know how to take the best pics on their phone to begin with. I am flabbergasted by how often people don’t realize that you can do a focus lock on your intended point of interest and then reframe the whole shot to improve the overall composition. I didn’t for some time til I googled “how to improve my iPhone pictures”.

    • Lynne says:

      Hi Ann

      Yes Snapseed is fabulous.

I think because you have an advanced skill on your iPhone, you will also love Camera + app. I wrote more in-depth about it in my book because it takes a great photo (much better than the iPhone camera itself… if you can believe it). The filters are sensible and easy to use.

Good point about the reframe too !

I have another that you may like… have you ever tried to take a photo with your iPhone and it is too dark? Just tap on the darkest part of the screen, and the whole photo will light up (with no need for a flash)

Wooooohoooo !!! That is one of my faves too !

      Cheers !

  13. Mary Werner says:

PicMonkey is so cool – thanks for the free tips! I think most of us would rather “try to be funny” than “succeed at being rude”. You notice I didn’t say hurtful because that can only happen from within and if I learned anything from your blog – you designed a life you want to live and that would exclude letting rude people hurt you in anyway.

    • Lynne says:

      Hi Mary !

PicMonkey is faboosh. Have you tried the royale features too? It seems very inexpensive for all the extras too. Having said that, the whole thing is EXCELLENT with or without the Royale added.

I love how easy it is to add text, filters, crop , resize and then share on social media ! It is one stop shopping 🙂

For peeps who are bloggers, it is also a great place to resize their photos so that they are web friendly. If blog photos are too large and not cropped for the web, they can make a blog very slow.

      Have a great day!

  14. Patti says:

Awesomely awesome … thanks for the tips!

  15. Tracie says:

Thanks for the tips, Lynne! And thank you for filling in so beautifully for Karen, so she can relax and eat chips!! I rather like being here and having you both in one place…..:)

  16. Bobbi says:

Hi Lynne….thanks for the reply to my clueless post yesterday….I am now endeavoring to put my recipes into categories !!
Lovely pics…..I am sending this photo post to my 13 year old niece. Is it just me, or are all kids prodigies with their electronics ?

  17. deneen says:

on a daily basis, I tap into the wonders that are Camera+, Hipstamatic/Oggl, Rhonna Designs, Picframe, & Snapseed. Was just recently introduced to Retouch – allows you to edit out unwanted crap from your photos – like when you accidentally get your finger over the lens just a bit & it screws up an otherwise amazing photo of your dog in a Mardi Gras costume…

    • Lynne says:

      You go girl Deneen !

      They are all epic. LOVE.

Have you tried OVER ? Holy smokes it is incredible !!!! You can add funky text over photos too. They have artistic options as well.

You can see a samples of its awesomeness on the OVER instagram feed.

      Just gorgeous !

Oh, and wait. I want to see your Dog in a Mardi Gras costume. I really think we should hang out together 🙂

  18. I have Hipstamatic on my phone and never think to use it for my blog. I totally agree with you about pictures catching peoples attention. “Pinterest” is a good example. Cheers Lynn on another great post!

    • Lynne says:

The great thing about hipstamatic is that when you take photos with your phone…the photo is automatically saved into your camera roll.

Do you have Photo Stream turned on, on your iPhone? If so, the photos are then automatically saved into your laptop. No need to transfer.

I just take the photo with my phone, within moments it is in my computer and voila it is there to use as a blog post. Magic 🙂

      Lynne xx

  19. Shauna says:

I love Google Plus because every picture I take on my phone gets automatically uploaded to Google Plus (but only for me to see unless I share them) and then I can open them and use their uber easy, awesome editor to edit the pictures and save them to my desktop where I can then easily upload them to anything, anywhere – my etsy site, my blog, my email, etc.

    • Lynne says:

      So well said Shauna !

Isn’t Google Plus d’best ? I hope more and more bloggers get over to G+ this year. It is THE place to be for growing an online presence. There are so many fabulous people playing in the platform as well.

The google plus features for photo editing and automatic uploading have been good too. Do you love #AutoAwesome ?!

I wrote a blog post a couple of weeks ago to help other bloggers understand G+. You may like it too :

It is one of those platforms where it is nice to just start with baby steps… one step at a time until you can throw yourself in there. So fab ! I will go and find you on G+ !!

      • Shauna says:

Yes, I am still in the baby steps mode. My husband actually turned me onto it because he hates FB. He loves the auto-awesome;) It’s made adding product to my etsy store so much faster and easier. Next thing I need to do is figure out why my admin password to my blog isn’t working so I can actually get on there and post a new little post …from Halloween where we did a HUGE Pirates of the Caribbean party and I have a buttload of pics to upload from Google+. Clearly, my blog isn’t my number one priority (or money maker) 🙂

        • Lynne says:

Too funny ! Well, I see your blog is a wordpress blog so you should be able to send a note to them and ask to reset your password. WordPress has great support !

I see you have an etsy shop with printables. It would be great to link to all of those in pinterest so you can sell from pinterest as well.

          Oh la la 🙂

  20. Janet says:

Oh Lynne….I was hesitating to read this post because it always costs me money when you and I talk about apps! Lol. Thankfully I have these ones – whew! My life savings is safe for today 😉 I love, love Snapseed, Pictapgo and the hipstamatic Oggl app. Too much fun to be had with photo apps and my macro lens 🙂
Your fellow app addict, Janet 🙂

    • Lynne says:

      Ha !

      Hi Janet !!!!!!

Hey everyone, Janet has been my ‘go to’ gal for apps for F.O.R.E.V.E.R. (because she is also a professional photographer) … so if you ever need extra app advice she is FAB to talk to !!

I hate to break it to you Janet, but there is ONE MORE that I fell head over heels in love with, that we haven’t talked about yet.

      Waterlogue <— I screamed that.

It is THAT good. It turns any photo into a watercolour. Ohmergerd.

  21. Ann says:

Lynn-thanks for taking the time to answe so many of us personally. That had to take you a lot of time. I did go download Camera+ and am liking it a lot. I also browsed a bit for the add-on camera lenses and can that purchase happening real soon. Now if you could just solve my current dilemma. I keep downloading fonts and can not for the life of me, get them to show up I can install and use them…..grrrrrr. Trying to work up a complex cable knitting pattern by hand sucks. Especially when all the right tools are out there for free

  22. Shauna says:

Oh yes, I link my printables in pinterest and I have an etsy store where I sell my graphics on wood signs at and have recently put those on pinterest as well:) I’ll be adding cheese boards, pinafores, and more coasters to the Old Urban Farmhouse store as well. Any marketing tips/tricks articles are always appreciated and eaten up. I’ll have to go sleuthing around your site now:)

    • Lynne says:

      Great to here Shauna,

You might want to consider getting RICH PINS on your pinterest account. (in order for the price banner to show up on Pinterest) for the goods you sell on Etsy.

It used to be easy with pinterest, and you could just put the $ sign in the description. Now, you have to have Rich Pins validated on your site for the price to show up in pinterest. Grrrrrh.

Seems complicated. It makes me want to trip people 🙂

      • Shauna says:

hmm, thanks, I’ll look into this Rich Pins thingy. I am blocked at work from Pinterest (pff, like I can’t work and be on Pinterest all day), but when I checked on my phone, I thought it showed the price. Phone stuff is always so different. I’ll have to check at home. Thanks for the tips! I’m trying to move away from my blog and my printables and focus more and more on Old Urban Farmhouse that has actual products to ship. The printables are nice though because they’re instant downloads and once I create them and set them up, there’s not much I have to do after that unless I get a custom order.

thanks again for all your time!

  23. Lynne says:

No worries Ann, if you can believe it.. I answer every single question and comment on my own blog too. That is my FAVE part about being a blogger 🙂

    Camera + is really great.
I wrote about even more apps in my free ebook as well. Percolator is another one that you may just adore.

Fonts : Do you use a Mac? If so, you have to be sure to open up the font file in your downloads after it has been downloaded and then click INSTALL FONT , in order for it to show up in your fonts on your laptop.

Knitting : I’m knitting a big blanket myself (my way of de-stressing LOL) and I gave up on the cables … to avoid stressing haha.

    Hope that helps !

  24. Allison says:

You’re a genius, you know that? Thank you!

  25. Barbie says:

Again….so helpful! so wonderful to chat with you today! I can’t wait to try some of these apps! I think I’m starting to get it! 🙂 Thanks so much for all your help and suggestions!

  26. Nancy says:

#1. My husband is a computer tech nerd safety engineer type. He cautions me against google+ like it’s diphtheria or something. Honestly, I never even asked why, I just don’t touch that dangerous place.
#2. The complaints remind me of people in the old days that got offended by a magazine article and cancelled their subscription. Well, why did they get a magazine if they didn’t want to get exposed to new ideas? You don’t have to agree with everything.
#3. I am heartily sorry for having offended for all the times I complained about the folding bottom sheets videos.

    • Lynne says:

You are absolutely hilarious and you just made my day. Oh, and I want to meet your husband. What a hoot.

Hip hip hooray for new ideas !!

      Have a beautiful day 🙂

  27. Christina says:

Love almost of the apps mentioned! My other go-tos are VSCO Cam for great filters & good editing, Square Ready for Instagrams where I don’t want to lose the shape of my original image and the photoshop app (PS Touch) for size changes, etc.

I haven’t tried Pic Monkey, so I’m off to check that one out.

  28. Lyn says:

Boy, I thought Karen had a great bunch of followers and all she has to do is go away for a week and all the mean girls come out. I’m shocked. I’m a “get to the point” type of person but wouldn’t tell Lynne the things people on here have. After reading her first post I learned to just scroll down to the content, that’s pretty easy, easier than bitching about it.
On the photo editing. I don’t have a smart phone because I’m cheap. Here are some of my favorites for the computer for all you other one or two people like me without a smartphone.
PicMonkey, iPiccy, Befunky, Ribbet, Rollip, LunaPic,, pixlr, fotor, and for editing pictures for selling on Ebay or Etsy makes those white background floating looking pictures.

    • Lynne says:

      Hi Lyn

      I love your name 🙂

Thanks for sharing iPiccy, Befunky, Ribbet, Rollip, LunaPic, Pixlr and Fotor and more ! I am going to have some FUN playing with those ones today !!!!

      You d’best.

The other gal with the same fantastic name 🙂

  29. Kaitlyn says:

As a fellow blogger, this has changed my life! Thank you!
