The First Look at my Kitchen!

Cabinets? Check!
Sink? Check!
Dishwasher? Check!
Range hood? Check!

It’s been a long time coming so I assume you’re ready for your first look at my new kitchen.  I’d normally leave a big reveal post like this for a Monday but there was no way I could wait.

It looks a little different than I envisioned.

  1. West Coast Nan says:

Oh wow, so many, many boxes for you to open, like Christmas all over!

  2. Linda Robbins says:

Looks stunning, but I’m a little concerned about workable counter space.

  3. Keelea L says:

    Damn, dude.

  4. Amy Owens says:

That was CHEAP!!! I feel so violated! (Can’t wait til Monday!) 🙂

  5. Therese Bourne says:

    You are cruel!

  6. Becky says:

I’;m really surprised you went with that color…what were you thinking??

  7. Janet says:

when you know there’s cool stuff inside just waiting to break out.

You lead me right down the garden path :). Well done.

  14. Ramona says:

Wow, Karen! I’m feelin’ ya. I’m smack in the middle of a kitchen remodel, too! The wait is excruciating! I’m a former kitchen designer, now stay at home mommy. I know waaaaaaaaay too much, and I was an awful, just awful client for my kitchen designer. Good thing she is my best friend and loves me!! I’m happy to send you pictures if you’re interested. That was an awful trick you played there. I was drooling, just DROOLING when you said “first look at my kitchen”. Technically, you didn’t mislead me, I just read what I wanted to hear! Ha ha! I have been living vicariously through you, and NEEDED to see some sort of completion. ARRRGGGHHHH! So much for that. So, I’m not expecting any big reveal Monday… I know how these things work in the kitchen world. Oh, wait. I’m kinda getting to know how you work now, too. (New fan!) So, I’m going to cross my fingers and count down the hours to Monday in hopes of a real reveal. Yea, no pressure or anything. Hee!

  15. Janelle says:

    So avent-garde!

  16. Mary Edmondson says:

You are a kick in the butt and you make me laugh – constantly.

  17. Agnes says:

One of those arrows isn’t pointing the right way…

  21. Pam W says:

Dang! You’re a little stinker! Funny as all heck, but still a stinker.

  22. Deborah Rokos says:

It looks just like my kitchen did last summer!! Only it was in the garage for 3 months, waiting for our contractor/friend to recover from falling off a garage….

  23. Fifi says:

Oh Man !!!!!…you suckered me in from your Facebook post……dang!!! I thought it was a bit too fast to see the completed reno…as you just posted your brick wall pics!!! Ya got Me good LMAO!! 24. Susan Preston says:

I couldn’t stand all the upheaval! I would have to stay on the couch in front of the fire and read a good book! Hope you have a good exacto knife for all those boxes. By the way I first saw that chair and thought oh look she doing her bathroom too!! Have fun…I’m sure you are!

  25. Call Me Patty says:

LOL. HAHA. Yeah. I know all about that all too well. Glad to see you’ve still maintained your sense of humour in the midst of all this.

  26. shuckclod says:

Silly Karen, those are cat houses… Hope you get help with the cabinets. Did they come assembled already? Can’t wait to see it all finished.

  27. Auntiepatch says:

  28. Christal says:

Now that’s just mean! I thought I was going to be lulled off to sleep with dream kitchen fantasies swirking through my head. Now all I have is kittens playing in cardboard boxes (thanks, jeanette). Ok, so thats not awful, but still…

  29. Julia says:

  40. Kyle says:

Guess you didn’t opt for the “open” plan.

  41. Maryanne says:

bet your cat had a good time with all those boxes!

  42. Tigersmom says:

Poor Margaret, forced to look out on a sea of cardboard boxes instead of at least getting a peek at what is in them.

I know just how she feels.

  43. Su says:

not sure how long cardboard will hold up under normal kitchen use…. 🙂

  44. Mary R says:

Wait for it………arghhhhhhhhh! You got me! Love it!

  45. Melinda says:

Karen, You always make me laugh! Love your humor and good luck!

  46. Gina says:

Dude, that was mean. I’ve got a fresh cup of coffee, I’m snuggled on the couch with my son and I was so excited for a little kitchen porn!! I’ve got a crappy kitchen that we can’t afford to renovate right now and I can’t wait to see what yours is gonna look like! Good luck with the next phase!

  47. Mary R says:

  62. Scott says:

  63. Bobbi says:

Lovely, just lovely!! The boxes could also go to someone with small children…for forts and such.
    Happy unpacking.

  64. Wendy says:

Those boxes look like really good child-friendly clubhouses to me! Why don’t you do a future post on how to do that!

  65. AngieC says:

It’s be-you-ti-ful!! I love all the brown. It looks exactly like my kitchen did – for the four months it sat in my living room. Enjoy all your trips to the cardboard recycling place because there’s most likely at least two layers of cardboard in each box.

  66. Sue says:

Oh man, I was so ready!! You pulled that off nicely!!

  67. Mary Werner says:

Assume you will be making a room divider or table or something from the boxes? I save some that has interesting corrugate inside and need a reason to save/use it. Maybe a wall treatment?

  68. Amber says:

You’re killing me, I’m so excited about this reveal! I’m also worried that with your kitchen being out of commission you have eaten nothing but potato chips for months. I can’t wait to see what kind of yummy meals come out of your shiny new/old kitchen.

  69. Marion says:

I really like what you’ve done with it, makes it feel cozy! hahaha, forreal though, start unpacking those boxes I can’t wait to see it finished!

  70. Looks like you have a busy busy weekend ahead of you with all those boxes You can build a fort, a firetruck, a race car, and I saw a cardboard gingerbread
Playhouse on Pinterest too!! Sooooo jealous!!!!

  71. Jcrn says:

I’m in double suspense. First, waiting for the kitchen reveal. Next, waiting to read about the craft projects Karen makes with all that cardboard. Trivets? Or maybe the boxes are just headed straight to recycling.

  72. Maria says:

Am not particularly fond of that dull cardboard color 🙂 Good on ya, ya tease!

  73. Carole McGinnis says:

Very funny. I can’t wait until Monday. I do like the natural brown color though.

  74. Beth Williams says:

  75. Leslie says:

Eeeeeeeek! I hope the pizza guy delivers in your area. And the wine guy.

  76. Amy Watson says:

I haven’t been reading your blog very long…..but long enough that l should have seen that coming !!!!!! l will check back in a month……a month of Sundays 🙂

  77. ally says:

At least you got them all in. When we re-did our kitchen, we couldn’t get the corner cabinet box into the house. Took the cabinet out of the box, still wouldn’t go through the door. So then we had to tromp it around to the backyard (in January) on a cold, blistery day through piles of snow and try to get it through the sliding glass door… Back we carried it to the garage, then had to take the handle off the sliding glass door, and the door-stop. Just squeezed in, phew. Nasty business, and no one ever told us the measurements and to be sure it could get into the house. And our house is only 40 years old, so it’s not like the doorways are unusually narrow. Almost cried……

    • Karen says:

I actually have a corner cabinet Ally that needed to be taken out of the box in order to get it in the house. I’m still a bit worried I won’t be able to fit it from the dining room into the kitchen! ~ karen

  78. Nancy Blue Moon says: got me this bet Cleo and Ernie are in cat box heaven..can my bunch come over to play??

  79. Shelley says:

Karen, I love what you’ve done with the place. There are some real design elements that have gone into this space. I love how the red arrows pop from the craft construction colour you so lovingly chose as your dominant colour for this room. The use of all the horizontal and vertical lines really gives the eye something to follow as you move throughout the room, it almost looks like tape but I’m sure its some vogue trend that everyone is dying to incorporate into their new kitchens; it’s probably scandinavian.
I really must complement you with the element of surprise you carefully chose in your design. The formal picture really works here, adding a touch of culture and old world at the same time. That should really tie-in well with the brick wall you and Betty have laboured over. I especially appreciate how you’ve made her peek out from behind the cabinets.
And that chair with the hoodies strategically placed over the back, it gives your kitchen guests a place to sit and sip their wine while you prepare the meal. Most people would generally use a bar stool but not Karen! I mean really people, why use a stool when you own THAT chair!!!
Well done Karen, please send more photos so we can copy the trend going on here.

  80. Erica says:

UGH I hate you right now. My hopes were so high!

  81. Patti says:

Sorry, I am still suffering from penis, opps I mean STOVE envy, I can’t get excited for you…okay! OKAY! I am lying, I AM excited for you!

  82. Barbie says:

You little stinker!! I “thought” it was to good to be true! So excited though….to see it all done and completed!

  83. Linda Weber says:

Wow. If your readers are as frustrated as they say, I can only imagine how frustrating the whole process has been for you! You have to live it. We just get to be entertained by it! And you are definitely entertaining ha!

  84. Annie says:

    I’m still laughing! LOL!!!!

  85. kelliblue says:

I can just *hear* Margaret going “yoo hoo! I’m over here, darling!” in a crisp British voice as she stands on her tippy toes to see what’s going on over all those boxes!

Congrats. The kitchen looks…lived in. 🙂 Seriously, cannot wait to see the finished product!

  86. Amie Mason says:

I immediately felt a little deflated, but Monday works better for me. We should be officially in our new house, so I look forward to spending the public holiday (Monday) lying in my hammock catching up on reading! I’ll be counting down!

  87. KJ says:

I thought it was a trick. So … will you be able to share pictures of your kitchen or do you have to wait for the magazine feature to be published?

  88. Karen J says:

Very clever! I was all excited. So excited that I scrolled down skipping the copy and what I thought was the before shot only to discover that it was A TEASER. *Damnit*

  89. Debbie says:

Awesome. Rather than think of something witty, I’m just enjoying the responses.

  90. SK Farm Girl says:

Mr. Dressup would be so proud! With all those cardboard boxes Mr. Dressup could have endless episodes featuring cardboard box crafts – LOL!

  91. Stephbo says:

    LOL! You got me!!

  92. Natika says:

Once, when I was a kid, my grandparents replaced their fridge and gave me the box to play with. It was the BEST PRESENT EVER! Looking at your picture that’s all I could think of. Now I want a fridge box again…

  93. Stephanie Hobson says:

I can’t say what I thought when I saw the “reveal”, but it rhymed with witch. lol

  94. Leonie Henham says:

It took five months from the time the pipe burst and ruined my kitchen and floor tiles to have the new one installed and working.
You have me in fits of laughter again. Thankyou.

  95. Hammock Chair Stand says:

I just couldn’t leave your web site before suggesting that I really enjoyed the usual info a person provide in your guests? Is gonna be again ceaselessly in order to investigate cross-check new posts
