What did you wanna be when you grew up?

I really wanted to be Cher when I grew up.  Then as I got a little older and more mature I realized  I could never be Cher.  So I refined my plans and decided I’d be Cheryl Ladd instead.

In highschool I started to lean towards something in fashion.  In university it was a lawyer.  Then I started to lean towards acting.  Acting turned into me becoming a television host, television hosting turned into writing, and hosting and writing finally morphed into me being a blogger.

If I had been smart I’d  have just looked at my Grade 3 or 4 report card and see what my teachers comments were.  Around that age is when we’re showing our true potential.  What we actually like and have an aptitude for.  Any later than that and we start to say we want to be be what we think we should be.  Things we think make us successful.   Lawyer, Plumber, Doctor, Fireman.

My teacher’s comments in grades 3 and 4 by the way?  They said I was an entertainer.  See?  I could have saved the money on the Law School Prep book and put it towards something that would further my career as an entertainer.  Like writing courses. Or a puppet theatre.  Or clown nose.

So as it turns out when I wanted to be Cher when I was a kid, I wasn’t far off.

When you boil it down, I wanted to be an entertainer (albeit with long black hair and of native heritage wearing sparkly pants with a feather headdress) and I ended up being, an entertainer.  Who sometimes wears a chicken on her head.

So now I’m wildly curious to ask you …

What did you want to be when you grew up?  And what did you end up being?

I don’t think I’ve ever been so excited to hear the answers to one of my questions. This may be my best comment section yet.

Go!  (and have a good weekend)

When I was very young, I wanted to have 4 children and live in a home with a white picket fence. Then when I had my first child and never got the white picket fence, I decided that was the end of that. Never wanted that kind of life again as I aged (screaming kids and screaming husband blah blah blah). Stay simple and true to yourself, oh and of course do stuff with Karen.

I wanted to be a horse. Seriously…a big, beautiful white horse with a golden mane. I was so intent on being a horse that I would practise galloping and winny-ing (?) around my neighborhood…stomping my “hoofs” and shaking my head while “rearing back” on my hind legs and pawing the air with my front hooves. I can only imagine what my neighbors thought .

  9. Sarah Jackson says:

Really? I wanted to be a scientist, a limnologist, study lakes, fresh water as opposed to saltwater. So, first I taught biology and chemistry in high school, ending up teaching GED preparation (where I cannot say).

  10. Alicia says:

I always wanted to be a mommy and I am one to two beautiful young women. I also wanted to be a fashion buyer (although I came to find out that was really my mother’s dream) but never went to college so ended up in too many jobs to count. Today I am a youth ministry director/church secretary and LOVE IT! I know people say it all the time, but I really wish I would have known my calling long ago. I would have gone to the seminary and cut out all the crap in the middle – except for the two beautiful daughters.

I am a speech pathologist In an elementary school and often ask my speech kiddos and other children I visit with around school what they want tot be when they grow up. Numerous responses are, ” a video game maker”. Not one response on this page has mentioned that, quite the change in society/culture of today’s children!!

P.S. I wanted to be a beautician or a model . Neither were my calling.

From the time I was a wee lass I wanted to become and archeologist–do I even know how to SPELL that now? I even went to college for it! LOL!

Still love it but all those people telling me that there were NO JOBS for people like me–well-I decided that I was NEVER going to learn to type as I was NEVER going to be a secretary–and I never HAVE–but don’t we all end up typing now ALL DAY LONG???

Did wild animal rescue for a long time–still do–and raised 3 kids in the country. One thing I learned how to do was to shop for whatever we needed at thrift and church sales and yard sales. So when the Interwebs came along I started selling stuff on line. And I love it.

But there was the day when I wondered—When I found myself typing “The British Monopoly Set Has Vintage Original Shrink Wrap—” Was THIS what I spent that education money on??? LOL!

I also wanted to grow up and have exotic adventures and marry the kind of boy my mother hated. And I did. Now we tour around on a large motorcycle and annoy our kids by being bikers. Well except for the kid who IS a biker. And the exotic adventures are coming closer as we get to retirement age! We went to Canada for LUNCH last week–does THAT count???

I can’t remember grade 3 or 4 professions except to be a figure skate like Dorothy Hammil. But high school brought dreams of Journalism – working for a newspaper, interviewing Momar Kadafi (long before I realized how much of a lunatic he really was) and all the fame and glory of professional journalism. Long and short – failed news writing in J-School, dropped out of college and got a job selling ads for the local paper in my small home town and 23 years later – still loving it!!

Now I’m 75 and I love it, I can say or do anything I want! I guess it takes a few years for some people

I wanted to be an ambassador, but didn’t particularly care for what country…I just liked the idea of international politics. I never did go into politics (yet), but I’ve been a social worker, a writer, a bicycle tour guide, a public radio news anchor, a web designer, a horse trainer, a cattle rancher/cowgirl, an editor, and a voiceover artist.

Currently working for the state of Minnesota doing outreach for parks and trails, and voiceover work on the side.

Not Cher, but one of the girls from ABBA. Fun topic, so thanks for asking!

My 2nd and 3rd grade teachers picked up on my love of writing when I started crushing on E.B. White. That dream evolved into a desire to be an eccentric novelist/poet locked away in a cabin in the woods with a dog and pottery wheel to keep me company.

Somehow that was replaced with the practical career goal of being a veterinarian or marine biologist.

But before college, I was back to writing and now I edit for the military and write a blog for fun. I suspect I’ll always stay close to words.
