Would you like to save this stuff?
I first ran this question in 2011. It got hundreds of comments, most of them more enthusiastic than you would think.

Over!! Rolls with pictures need to be placed that way so you can see the pictures before you defile the face on the paper.....
Danni
Gahhh! It won't upload my picture, I have TP with the moronic face of D. tRump.

I’m happy when someone puts the roll NEAR the toilet paper holder! In my household the question is toilet paper ON the toilet paper holder or OFF!
Malia
Of course it’s over. Water flows over unless there is a hurricane pushing it back but even then it’s just flows backward for a time and then rights itself. Even commercials show it over and EVERYONE knows that if it’s on TV, it must be right! LOL. But then I have a bidet seat so what do I know.
Christie
Over! Of course - though if any of the boys change the roll ( which would be a miracle in itself), who knows what you’ll get!

Still Over

Over. Beards are okay, mullets are not.

The only logical answer: Over, Duh.

No question about it! Over!

Most definitely OVER .. I confess I’ve even been known to change the one at my Hair Salon… it just bugged me!!
Pat
Both! I've found when the toilet is closer to the wall the paper is easier to unroll when it goes over. When the toilet is further from the wall it's more convenient for the roll to go under. Otherwise, I don't spend much time thinking about it.

I was an under until I got married then I was forced to become an over because apparently, *I* was wrong LOL (and it truthfully didn't matter to me)
I have read that cat owners tends to be under because it's less enticing for Kitty when the paper is against the wall.
Julia Sirrine
Over, 100%.

ALWAYS over, except….. I have a covered toilet paper dispenser in both my home ( as opposed to my cottage) bathroom because I have a devil cat ( Puff O’Smoke) who adores unrolling the TP. In that case, the toilet paper dispenses better upside down (under). This is also the case in our little teardrop (T@B 400) travel trailer. The TP dispenser is also a covered one in the wet bath to avoid getting…..wet. It also dispenses best in the upside down position.

For years my husband and I had opposite opinions so the positive results were that I never had to ask him to replace a spent roll...nor did I have to be reminded. Whoever replaced it "had their way"! But I've come to admit that over is the correct/best way. And even crazier, during covid we used separate bathrooms, and still do most of the time, so we both could have chosen our own method anyway! But I'm still an over convert these days.

Years ago when bathroom tissue was printed with designs, the print was only on the one side. The top/outside. Therefore, you would get the best display from hanging it over!

I fondly remember visiting the British Museum in London in the early '70s. High point: visiting the loo and finding that each square of toilet paper was printed with 'property of Her Majesty's Government' or something like that.
Additional note: it was the worst non-absorbent toilet paper ever: very smooth so it just pushed things around. Gak.
But back to the survey: Her Majesty's toilet paper was installed as an 'over' roll. So that was the official British position of the time.
Robin P
Ah, yes, here that would be called "John Wayne" toilet paper if it were coarse in addition to being non-absorbent.
"Rough and tough and won't take sh** off anybody." 😎😉

Somewhere out there, I saw it a while ago, there is a copy of the original instructions on how to use toilet paper (yes seriously) it is over.
Randy P
Per the official Government Patent for the product's drawing - Over of course. I ain't gonna be no law-breaker ner nuthin'.

Over. There are scientific studies showing it is unsanitary to have the TP under. The pawing to get the square leaves germs all over the roll. Ew.
Kath
Definitely over!!!
Alison Wagstaffe
OVER!! Goes without saying! Always correct it if inadvertently ( and mistakenly) it gets under. Just no!
Grammy
Over. Don't make me have to tell you this again. Over. It's settled. Tell the Unders that they are wrong and that they should seek professional help if they can't understand this. Over.
Alison Wagstaffe
Absolutely indisputably correct!
