Always OVER here. Please tell that to my mother when she comes to stay. I try to get to them before she does - 'cuz she hangs 'em wrong.
Angela
To add another layer to this debate, apparently the Japanese unanimously vote OVER. Toilet paper holders out here come with a little topper flap that makes it easy to tear your paper, but basically impossible to have the roll UNDER without damaging the paper.

It looks like I am in the minority, but I am UNDER all the way. I have been training my husband because he doesn't have a preference.
Carole
This was always a big debate in my household growing up.
I think the under option is the better bet as you end up using less TP, a good option when you have kids that spin the roll to create a giant q-tip shaped bundle on the end of their arm.
Amanda
Has to be over! Except now with the cat it's under...the sink! I would rather have to open a door to get to the toilet paper than hang it the wrong way!
Elizabeth
I have cats and it's still OVER.
Nathalie
I am totally an over person.
I am also evil.
There is a girl at our clinic that belongs in the under-world. She is also OCD-ish so she always places the TP under.
I sneak in and change it to over every.single.time LOL. Drives her nuts.
...wait...doesn't that make ME OCD-ish?
karenagain
LOL @ The under-world. Love it. The people I live with must be OCD because they can rarely bring themselves to ever change the roll. AND if they ever do, the empty roll must remain on the counter or the side of the tub. They must never put the empty roll in the garbage. Never ever! They like me to do that part.
It's a huge process. Squeeze, release, remove, DISCARD THE RIGHT WAY, get a fresh one, insert, squeeze and release.
Don't forget all the steps involved in driving to Walmart to buy it either. Unlock truck, drive to gas station, remove gas cap, fill up, drive to mall, park, walk in and get yelled at by greater who wants to know if I want a Walmart Master-Card, go to the CASH ONLY line where I am asked if this will be on my Walmart Master-Card, really?, but then get asked again if I want to apply for one. THEN she asks if I want to donate a dollar to mental health. I say no while I'm wondering whose mental health.
Nathalie
I'll let you in on a little secret...no one is NORMAL. Everyone has mental health issues, so that means that everyone is normal then. Makes sense right?
BTW I'm guessing but do you live with a bunch of boys? re: not changing the rolls?
Karen, do you find that more girls like the over than boys?
Karen
Yup ... it appears as though men lean more towards under. But there are women who like it too. It's all very fascinating. ~ k!

Sorry, you totally did make the point! Excuse my redundance!
Over looks nicer, but under rips better. Practicality trumps vanity. (stomp stomp)
Jilly
Am I the only one fascinated by the fact that this 2-picture, 10-word post has generated over 100 comments? Guess we like our potty talk... just sayin'!
Over n' out. :-p
Pati
OVER...OVER...A THOUSAND TIMES OVER !!!! Hubby say's under, but what does HE know ??? It's not like he's been wiping his butt his whole life or anything.... ;o)
Becky
Hi Karen, et al.
Under...and since i like a debate: pepsi
If those people with paper wasting animals and babies, get them to squeeze the toilet paper roll so it's oblong and won't roll simply out of momentum. Somehow that doesn't come across well in internet form. Much easier to 'splain in person.
karenagain
Oh, I know what you're saying cause I just tried to say the same thing. But OVER just looks nicer! And I won't debate you on Karen's blog about Pepsi vs anything because Diet Coke rules. Done deal. Stomps feet.
Karen
You are a wise, wise woman, karenagain. ~ karen

OVER. In those old recessed holders under could cause problems. In the newer surface mount holders, both ways work just as well, but still do it over. If you want your kids or cats to stop unravelling, squish the roll a bit to bend the cardboard. It will still flow freely for you but the TP can't be "spun" off the roll with an easy flick of the wrist or paw.

Too late, we just finished our "intelligent" discussion about air ventilation. He says we need to open the kitchen window when running the stove vent.
I say, how unpleasant to have cold air coming in when the oven has warmed things up (it's quite chilly here near Boston today).
He said, go look it up -- as if I don't have enough to do. There was yelling.
I looked it up. If you have a commercial grade vent (we don't) and a "tight" house (debatable), you need to be concerned about "make up air."
Do you know anything about this, Karen? In the meantime, I guess I'll be donning hat and mittens whenever the stove vent is running and the Mr. is home.
Karen
Judith - If you have a regular vent and a regular house you don't need to open a window. Do not. You *do* however need to clean both of your dryer vents. Yes. I said both. ~ karen
Judith
I love it when I'm right. And thanks for the reminder about the dryer vents.
Amy
OVER! Under is all wrong. The toilet paper tears off one square at a time. Any educated adult knows that over is the superior way.
Erin
OVER is OBVIOUSLY the right way. BUT! But I have to do under in my house because when I do over, my cats completely unravel the toilet paper all over the floor! Nuts!
kelliblue
OVER OVER OVER! It just makes more sense, is easier to find when you're half asleep, and (in the case of paper towels) is easier to grab when your hands are dripping! (I said HANDS not...other parts)
Sally
Under usually...taught preschool too long and learned there...did you know if it's over they can put the end in the bowl & flush away most of the roll? What fun, for them... harder to do with an under.
I know the TP designers like to show off their art, and motels & hotels like to make that snazzy point on the end of the roll so they use over... but, I'm not interested in hosting TP art nor do I make those points... what are they for, do you suppose? What is the point of the points?
I am, however, amazed at how some people are so adamant that they will change the TP in other people's bathrooms... I can't believe anyone would actually do that... I can't believe they would change it in their own bathroom if hubby put it on the "wrong" way.
And they yell about it... that's scary... very scary...
What have you done, Karen? What is this Pandora's box of personal hygiene you have opened?
marné
Over over over
In 13 years of marriage my husband has replaced the roll exactly once. Lucky for him, he did it right. I even installed on of those one-armed TP holders, so all you have to do is slip the roll on, no complicated spring, and he still won't replace it. We might need counseling.

Couldn't care less as long as there is paper there when it's needed. My hubby has a thing for over though, which I didn't know until we were married. I told him if he cared so much he could change the rolls from now on. They now reside on the counter.

Over. Period.
