I sometimes forget that you know a lot more about me than I know about you.  I mean, you know that I’m a hooker, that I had a possible nervous breakdown while sitting in my closet … you even know what kind of toilet paper I use.

I meet people all the time who know me from my blog and during our conversation it’s entirely possible they might bethinking “Hey.  I wonder how Karen’s yeast infection is doing.”

Well, did you ever think that it might be nice for me to look at YOU for once and think, “Hey.  I wonder how her itchy lady parts are doing.”.

Let’s make that happen today.  Not the yeast infection, (that’s a special spell I have reserved for people who park sideways and take up more than one parking spot at Ikea on a Saturday), but the recognizing you bit.

This is what 70% of you look like to me and everyone else who reads this blog.

Faceless blobs of air.  Who are you people?  I don’t know.  In my head and the heads of everyone else reading the comments on blogs you possibly looking something like this …

So what are those little pictures and why doesn’t your photo show up?

Those are called Avatars and they’re put there by something called Gravatar.  Which stands for Globally Recognized Avatar.  Almost all blogs and websites are Gravatar enabled which means they are all ready, willing and able for your picture.

All you have to do is go to the Gravatar website and upload your photo.  Then Gravatar basically attaches itself to you and whenever you comment on a blog, Gravatar follows you there and includes your photo.

How to get your photo to show up in blog comments.

  1.  Go to the Gravatar website.
  2. Sign up.
  3. Create your profile which includes uploading your photo.
  4. Done!  Now when you comment on any blog or website that is Gravatar enabled your photo will show up.   Pretty much every website has Gravatar enabled on it by the way.
  5. You can change your profile picture whenever you want by going back to the Gravatar website and uploading a new photo.

In the profile section of the Gravatar website you can fill out your name, where you’re from and a little bit about yourself.

Why would you do that?  Well there’s a little surprise to Gravatar that not everyone knows about. If you hover over someone’s photo on any blog comment if they’ve filled out their profile, that information pops up!  So you can tell the world a little bit about you and you can learn a little bit about your fellow commenters.

And don’t worry if you’re a little bit shy you can upload a photo of anything.  Your dog, your cat, your kid.  I prefer to see recent photos of the actual person but the choice is yours.

I’ve only used 3 different Avatars on this blog since starting it but I might switch it up soon.

O.K. now it’s time for you to try to do it yourself!

I’ll be here.  Waiting.  And itching.

To see your pictures. ;)

    • Karen says:

LOL. I’m not sure why Courtney. It could be because the other sites don’t have Gravatar installed? Most do though … ~ karen!

  9. Courtney says:

Thanks Karen! I subscribed to your blog immediately after reading only one. You have a great sense of humor and humility which is why I love reading about the stuff you do. It gives me hope. Like maybe I can do stuff too.

  15. Thank you so much for this!! It’s finally working OMG.

  16. Stephbo says:

So, this is me and lovely Abigail. Just in case you were wondering …. ??

    • Karen says:

I wouldn’t have even noticed Abigail if you hadn’t pointed her out! Great pic. Snakes don’t bother me. I was covered from neck to waist in them once and it was very cool. Spiders on the other hand? No. I’d have to ban your picture if there was a spider on your shoulder. ~ karen!

  21. Chris says:

I did it! Thanks. Always nice to learn something new.

  22. Karin Sorensen says:

  25. Julie says:

    Okay…one more time…

    • Karen says:

I’m not sure what it is you’re doing wrong Julie. Really the only thing you have to make sure of is that your email address that you use here on The Art of Doing Stuff is the same as the one you use when you register on Gravatar. ~ karen!

  26. Julie says:

Did it work? Am I taking a selfie with a goat?

  27. JJ from Cali says:

Must admit I was a little hesitant. There’s a reason I’m not on FB and the like… Darn you, Karen, for ruining all us lurkers!

(And, now I’m wondering if my Gravatar’s going to show up on my husband’s posts since we share an email.)

  28. Gilly Bean says:

  29. Centi says:

I’m not sure… did it work?

  30. MaryJo says:

Funny that you should write about Gravatars, I just got my own a couple of days ago. I had never heard of them before but I’m in the process of setting up my own food blog about baking and was told to make a gravatar for myself.
So I hope it works. =0)

  31. Marlene Eastman says:

Test test …. not too sure if I did this right ?

  32. Sabina says:

Here I am! This is one of my favorite pics from this summer at the Erie County Fair in Hamburg, NY. Happy Thanksgiving everyone, I’m thankful for this blog, among just a few other things, lol!

  33. Nancy Blue Moon says:

You have seen my picture for years…or rather my cats picture…maybe I could put up another cat…maybe…..I……could…..maybe….I…will…maybe…

  34. Sandra says:

    Okay, I did it :)

  35. Mary Edmondson says:

Changed my photo to a better one that’s only two years old. We have to use the ones that make us look good, right? Now 77 but it’s still my look. Close ups don’t ignore the obvious signs of age, however.

  36. savannah says:

I thought I had an avatar already!

  37. Ellen says:

I loaded one eons ago. It’s a picture of my grandmother who I was named after, standing beside her barn. Not sure if it shows up.

  38. Shanandrala says:

    Here I am!

    • Karen says:

Pysansky? I do not know what a Pysansky is. This is one of those things that EVERYONE knows about but me, right? ~ karen!

      • Shanandrala says:

As an chicken lady I cannot believe you have not run into a Pysanka (singular pysanky) or two in your past!! Pysanky (or Pysanki or Pisanki) are Ukrainian Easter Eggs. I am a novice compared to many, or at least my eggs look that way although I’ve been making them for years and years. You see breakfast when your chickens gift you with eggs. I see breakfast and a blank slate to decorate. I tried to attach an image, but in case that hasn’t worked feel free to check out my instagram account, where I post many pictures of Pysanky (and cats and food).

        • Karen says:

Oh!!!!!! Those!!!!!! I love those!!!!! I quickly looked at your Instagram account and your eggs look pretty elaborate to me. Uch. Yet another thing I’d love to learn how to do! I’m gonna need to live to about 350 to get everything done I want to do, lol. ~ karen!

        • Shanandrala says:

Thank you – “those” are my fun/crafty thing. So many others I’d like to try. Maybe one of these days! P.S. I love your blog. You have a way of turning every topic into an interesting and entertaining one. I’ve laughed and cried along with you over the years – I feel super geekily (that’s a word, right?) that you took the time to look at my eggs and comment back. Happy Holidays to you!

        • Shanandrala says:

          * Geekily happy :-)

  39. Alicia says:

    Did it work?! Very exciting.

  40. Marlene Eastman says:

Well, I did it …. hope it works!!!

  41. Marlene Eastman says:

I didn’t even know about this …. thanks for the education!!!

  42. Rhonda says:

Thanks for teaching me something new today!

  43. lyanne says:

i did it…..let’s see if i did it right?! hope my pic makes you a happy camper, cuz your blogging’ keeps me happy!

  44. Raymonde says:

    O.K. I’m coming out of the shadows… ;-)

  45. Katie C. says:

I’ve always wondered how to do that!

  46. Barbara Schmid says:

Wonder if I did this correctly …

  47. Kathy says:

Ok….I will go to gravitar since you asked, nicely, I might add. I’m usually wary of complying with your requests….I mean, that one word game you suggested cost me about five bucks and endless hours of time before it occurred to me you’d never know if I stopped playing….

But really, I wanted to let you know my Christmas gift creating and purchasing is done!!! Everything gets delivered on Thanksgiving as that is the main gathering spot for the clan of thirty kids and adults……

Now, aren’t you proud of me? In December? I will give the house the scent of cinnamon and baking cookies to give away hither and yon, and will sew more garb for the Indian wedding coming up in the new year!!! Now that will be a gift for me….time at the sewing machine!! Love it.

    • Karen says:

I’m very proud. Good job! I think you’re doing better than me actually, lol. And wait! What game did I make you buy, lol?

      • KATHLEEN H says:

        Four Pictures One Word

And I think I totaled, oh, 400 games before I realized that I did have a life. A couple of organizations to run. Garden to tend. Agency to Chair……and I put it into the cloud. I don’t know if you ever can really get totally rid of your obsessions,, I mean, apps. And it was the only free app I actually broke down and bought coins to get me a few more hints. I think it cost me close to 6 dollars (US)
